Natural 0.19 ct cobalt-blue spinel from Vietnam, displaying intense electric-blue color.

Cobalt Blue Spinel - An Phú, Luc Yen District, Vietnam - 0.19ct

A minute gemstone with an extraordinary visual presence, this natural cobalt-blue spinel from the An Phú area of Lục Yên, Vietnam displays an exceptionally vivid electric blue with a luminous cyan character. At only 0.19 carats, its 3.30 × 3.00 mm face-up profile is remarkably compact, yet the saturation and brilliance give the stone an intensity far beyond its physical scale.

The color presents as a bright, high-chroma cobalt blue rather than the darker, gray-modified appearance often encountered in iron-dominated blue spinel. Its open, electric character is particularly striking in motion, where the modified mixed cut produces crisp flashes across the crown. Vietnamese blue spinel is notable for precisely this exceptional color phenomenon: scientific examination of Luc Yen material has established cobalt as the principal chromophore responsible for the most saturated blue examples.

The stone is fashioned as a cushion modified mixed cut with a deliberately shallow 1.60 mm depth, giving it a generous face-up footprint for its weight and emphasizing brightness and visual spread. Macro examination reveals fine internal micro-clouding and scattered pinpoint inclusions, together with minor facet abrasion near the girdle/pavilion junction. These characteristics are visible under magnification but remain unobtrusive at normal viewing distance.

Its recorded origin is An Phú, Lục Yên District, Yên Bái Province, Vietnam—an important locality within a region internationally recognized for vivid blue spinel. Fine electric-blue material from the Luc Yen district is characteristically small, making specimens of this size and color particularly interesting as examples of the locality's cobalt-blue production.

Small in scale but uncompromising in color, this is a gemstone whose significance lies not in weight, but in concentration: a tiny volume of natural spinel carrying an unusually intense expression of Vietnamese cobalt blue.
